Welcome to the World's First Great Big Vegetable Challenge! Six years ago we went on a vegetable journey of a lifetime. A 7 year year old boy named Freddie and his mother faced up to the challenge of turning him from a Vegetable-Phobic into a boy who will eat and even enjoy some of life's leafier pleasures. We ate through the alphabet of vegetables...and returned to tell the tale. Join our Great Big Veg Challenge!

R is for Roasted Radishes
I did toy with the idea of carving a face in a radish and then came to my senses. For our very own 'Noche de Rabanos’, I roasted the radishes. I bought bunches of beautiful multicoloured radishes, coated them in seasoned olive oil and put them in the oven. I served them to Freddie and Alex with some roast chicken. “What sort of potatoes are these?”asked Freddie. Once roasted, the radishes become quite tender and they lose some of their fiery taste. I told Freddie he was eating radishes. he looked surprised but awarded the roasted radishes a stunning 8 out of 10. The radish is going up in his estimation...
Noche de Rabanos Roasted Radishes
750g radishes
6 garlic cloves
2-3 tablespoons of sesame oil
Half tsp of mild chilli powder
Half tsp of smoked paprika powder
A pinch of sea salt
Preheat the oven to 190C. Cut the radishes in half. Place them in a deep baking tray. Peel the garlic cloves and add them whole.
Cover the radishes and garlic in the sesame oil, mild chilli powder and smoked paprika. Add a pinch of salt. Stir well to make sure they are coated in the oil and seasonings. Roast in the oven for 30 minutes. Half way through, stir them round to make sure they are evenly cooked. Serve hot.
You can try this with baby turnips and other root vegetables if you prefer.
I love radish, but have never thought of roasting them. These look delicious and I'll certainly be giving them a go.
ReplyDeleteHahah, carving faces before roasting would certainly create a panful of shrunken heads, wouldn't it?!
ReplyDeleteI just might have to give this a try--have never really liked radishes. But this looks good.
I roast loads of veg but I've never thought of throwing in radishes. We teased Ade on holiday for buying so many radishes and kept throwing them into the swimming pool whilst joking that they are probably a "superfood" we found out later they are!! Have you thought about growing your own and eating them as sprouting seeds? It's a fun thing to do with the kids.
ReplyDeleteSuch a good idea! I love roasted veggies but never thought to try radishes. I'm going to try this.
ReplyDeleteSo loving the simplicity of this recipe!
ReplyDeleteI will have to give it a go.Be like Freddie and be a "new food trier". Never would have thought roasting radishes would make such a world of difference. You can find the big globe ones that would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say I've never roasted a radish; sauteed is nice, though. Something I'll have to try!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea to roast the radishes. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteRoast radish - who'd have thought it. I like it stir fried and I'm guessing the taste of it roasted now so think we'll have to try.
ReplyDeleteAmanda, teh flavour mellows slightly - which is good for children who dislike the sharpness of a radish. It is also a beautiful colour when roasted - which is irrelevant but looks good on a plate!
ReplyDeleteCynthia - thank you. are radishes a feature of local cooking where you live?
Scott - It is worth trying. Let me know what you think.
Karen D - please do try it out.
Lindy - Oh yee of little faith. Ade clearly has an instinct for foods that maintain his supergod status....
Jules - They look and taste delicious which is a happy combination!
Mrs W liked your image of the shrunken heads - I may try that next.
Bellini - It is all about trying things out - new tastes and this one was popular.
Garrett - Thanks. I like simple. It takes less time!
I'm really glad you did this, Charlotte. We grow lots of radishes in our garden and I've always meant to look into ways to cook them--rather than eating them raw--and just have never gotten around to it. This opens new vistas for serving radishes to the family--maybe they'll even eat them.
ReplyDeleteI laughed when you wrote that you thought about carving a face in a radish and then came to your senses. I love reading your posts and about your family Charlotte and cooking ... have you ever thought about making this into a book? It's SO great! And Freddie is so cute.:-)
ReplyDeleteRoasted radishes... how very interesting. Wonderfully colourful, so very appealing! Do they taste anything like roasted turnips - which is what comes to my mind, looking at your picture?
ReplyDeleteI had vowed to try radishes cooked in some way...I've always had mine raw...and this will definitely be my first recipe to try. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen these pictures on the BBC website? I am sure there is a radish in there somewhere...
ReplyDeleteNow for the link that I meant to post: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7186989.stm
ReplyDeletethe colours are so pretty! You could adapt a colour scheme from them. Whoops, the designer just slipped in there!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte, Thanks!! I would never have thought of roasting radishes. Must definately give this a try.
ReplyDeleteI love the photo. I stared at it for a little bit, wondering why you'd given the post a heading about radishes when clearly you'd gone and roasted some new potatoes. Then I noticed that the potatoes had these funny little tails...
ReplyDeleteThis looks great. And really, really interesting (in a good way). I think I might serve them up without comment, as well, though, and just see what happens.
These look gorgeous! I love radishes, but one can only take them raw for so long. I'll give these a try with my next roast chicken too . . . I'll bet my daughhter will love them. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI have never had roasted radishes but they do look good. Sara from farmingfriends
ReplyDeleteMy favorite radish recipe is here, though you probably need to like cilantro/fresh corriander. The tomato takes the edge off the bite of the radish.
ReplyDeleteAlways fun to follow along on your adventures!
We love roasted veggies, but I have to admit I've never added radishes. That is certainly something I will try the next time.
ReplyDeleteCrafty Gardener - Let me know whta you think of roasted radishes. They were a surprise hit with us.
ReplyDeleteTea - Thank you for visiting and for all your encouragement with our blog. We will try out your recipe...
Farming Friends - Sara - Hope you are all well. Do you grow radishes in the farm?
Swirling Notions - Did your daughter like them? They are not a particularly child-friendly vegetable but they are growing on Freddie. Each taste he seems to like them a little more. It takes a lot of different recipes to win him over with this vegetable.
Meg - I know -they look unexpected dont they>
Pat
Holler - I liked the way they looked great on a pink plate but then again that didnt exactly do it for my 8 year old son!
Pat - Thanks Pat. Hope you are well and enjoying the New Year.
I googled roasted radishes just because that is what I wanted to do with them and wanted to know if there were any proven recipes.
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch. I am going to try it.
Amala
Brilliant! I was just googling a recipe for what to do with a bunch of radishes and here you are. Am going to try this tonight with a roast lamb, pumpkin, onion and stuffing - yum!
