How not to welcome a family to a restaurant

To mark the taking of my daughter's 11 plus exam we went to see a film and have a meal out. We chose a new Lebanese restaurant off Kensington High Street, sat down and ordered two courses for the four of us. I asked for mint tea for the adults and a glass of tap water for the children. It was all going so well. Beatrix Potter the movie had been a touching, comforting family sort of film, noone had argued too viciously about my refusal to buy popcorn for four pounds a carton and we were all in a fairly good mood. But then they refused the kids a glass of water. They offered fizzy mineral water which Freddie won't drink. The nice fuzzy Sunday mood evaporated ( shows how skindeep it was). A glint of anger appeared in my husband's eye as the waiter flounced off looking appalled that we should be wanting a glass of tap water. The manager came over and explained with what looked suspiciously like arrogance that as his restaurant had metered water tap water was not on the menu and that we if we insisted it would be a pound per glass. All this when we were ordering and paying for a two course meal for four of us.
I don't like conflict, the kids were hungry and so we had to pay for our tapped water for the children. Clearly we won't be going back there again....Does this happen anywhere else? I doubt it.

I would have walked out if that had happened to me!

I sympathise. I was once in a restaurant and asked for a glass of water. The waiter looked very reluctant until I said I needed to take some tablets and then relented. It was after an accident and I was very obviously 'damaged'.

It seems ridiculous to me - if you are buying a meal and probably another drink with it - how can a restaurant justify charging someone for a glass of tap water?
    Specially not children.

I have never heard of being charged for plain old tap water. That is insane!

The only time I've ever heard of that is at a fast food restaurant, and then it's usually 25 cents or so for the cup.

In the state of Nevada it's a law that you can't charge for water if you have it. But with temps that can get up to 120 F, who blames em.
